As we approach the warmer months and the festive period, we reflect that Christmas is the season of joy.
Recently, I met with Mercy Place Parkville resident Rosalind Smallwood who has shared with me this beautiful Christmas poem. It is one that her mother passed on to her and it is a reminder that Christmas is a special time — a season to connect with loved ones and welcome peace into our lives.
Jesus bids us shine with a pure clear light
Like a little candle shining in the night
In this world of darkness so we must shine
You in your small corner, and I in mine
Thank you, Rosalind. A new year will soon be upon us. While we are continuing to respond to the challenges of a global pandemic and significant reform in the aged care, disability and mental health sectors, I am hopeful about our future. The many stories of great care and compassion that people receive through Mercy Health inspire optimism, as do the extraordinary Mercy people who make it their mission to serve people with kindness and hospitality.
This edition of Our Voice is a great read with stories from around Mercy Health — unwell babies returning safely home thanks to the tremendous skill and commitment of our neonatal intensive care teams; improving health outcomes for migrant and refugee patients; aged care residents keeping active; and meaningful connections between home care staff and clients.
This is what the Founder of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley had in mind when she said, “You must be cheerful and happy, animating to all around you.” Through our acts of service, the people of Mercy Health bring joy and hope each day to the people for whom we care.
On behalf of the Mercy Health Board and Executive, I offer you my season’s greeting and wish you a joy-filled and healthy Christmas and New Year.
